Systems Operator
Summary
The position is required to efficiently monitor and manage system resources following procedural guidelines and routines and to ensure all computer processing (specifically End-Of-Day) is completed within the scheduled time frames for all SBUs under the GKFG. The incumbent is required under infrastructure and operations support team guidance to assist with daily system monitoring, verifying the integrity and availability of all hardware, server resources, systems and key processes, and the execution of server upgrades including hardware upgrades, or operating systems upgrades and patches
Responsibilities
General Responsibilities:
- • Executing the procedures associated with the Business-Day and End-of-Day (EOD) processes for the SBUs under GKFG’s critical software applications.
- • Close monitoring of the online environment to ensure all system prompts/messages are responded to in a timely manner.
- • Working with other personnel and support groups to ensure that all applications, database, hardware and software issues are addressed and resolved quickly in order to minimize service impact.
- • Distribute all production output e.g. reports and statements in accordance with stipulated guidelines.
- • Manage the backup and archiving of the SBUs under GKFG’s critical data according to predefined procedures and best practices to ensure efficient and accurate data recovery when required.
- • Processing all work according to standard procedures and guidelines, ensuring that pre-established time frames for completion are met.
- • Assist in the problem resolution/system performance process by promptly and effectively gathering any supporting information and documentation relative to production problems encountered and duly escalated upward for resolution or raising of incident and problem logs.
- • Assisting with the liaising with users on corrective action underway relative to application/production problems encountered which impacts on online availability or has resulted in overnight processing deadlines not being met.
- • Complete daily logs ensuring that the status of the production processing environment is appropriately noted and unusual activities/requests recorded
- • Maintain records to ensure adequate work supplies are in stock e.g. tapes, printer ribbons, forms, etc.
- • Ensure all magnetic media used for processing are handled in accordance with standard guidelines.
- • Maintain computer equipment as per service instructions issued by the vendor and obtain service to prevent inoperability or when computer equipment is inoperable.
- • Assist in other areas of the Department to maintain service standards to internal customers at all times
- • Be available for cross training in other tasks as required so as to provide relief when necessary.
- • Ensure that all tasks are executed in accordance with established procedures and guidelines at all times.
- • Keep confidential combination, password and user ID and monitor other users through constant reminders.
- • Ensure that backup data procedures and off-site storage requirements are strictly observed.
- • Monitor users of the various systems to ensure that there are no deviations from the systems requirements.
- • Ensure access privileges/ credentials are created in accordance to request made for applications under FGB.
- • Supporting projects under FGB.
- • Install and configure computer hardware operating systems and applications.
- • Monitors and manipulates daily system jobs.
- • Generates reports from batch jobs and distributes to end-users daily.
- • Responds to incoming telephone calls, and email inquiries from internal customers (after regular work hours) regarding system-related problems.
- • Any other duties that may be assigned.
IT Security and Compliance:
- • Comply with security measures and internal control procedures to minimize fraud, forgeries and irrecoverable losses and reduce non-compliance.
- • Ensure that the Financial Division maintains a strong security posture that safeguards against varying cyber threats and attacks including but not limited to, Trojans, malware and ransomware.
- • Apply relevant patches and upgrade on the prescribed schedule, and upgrade administrative tools and utilities. Configure/add new services as necessary.
- • Ensures the hardening of all servers and devices to minimize the vulnerabilities and threats to the network and systems.
- • Execute routine checks (daily, weekly & monthly) to ensure adequate controls are being maintained to minimize unauthorized access to system.
Business Continuity and Disaster Recovery:
- • Maintains, monitors, review the execution of all server backups and disaster recovery operations, this includes replication.
- • Perform routine start-up and shutdown procedures, and maintain control records.
- • Design, configure, and test computer hardware, networking software and operating system software.
- • Research technology, and implement it or recommend its implementation.
- • Implement systems to ensure systems recovery capability consistent with the GKFG’s Recovery Time (RTO) and Recovery Point objectives (RPO).
- • Repair and recover from hardware or software failures. Coordinate and communicate with impacted users via the established channels.
Required Skills
- • General knowledge of Data Processing, LANS/WANS, Computers, peripherals and operating systems (Windows Server and UNIX variants). Knowledge of PC troubleshooting.
- • High degree of flexibility required to be able to adapt to a constantly changing environment, and to keep abreast of changing procedures.
- • Ability to work in isolation with little support while addressing issues requiring timely resolution.
- • Well-developed problem solving skills to resolve relatively complex issues and develop long term solutions.
- • Capable of interacting with individuals of differing levels of experience and expertise
- • Strong analytical, problem solving and decision-making skills
- • High level of initiative and flexibility
- • Must be highly team-oriented
- • Excellent “customer service” attitude
- • Excellent communication and well developed interpersonal skills
- • Must be highly motivated, responsible, possess initiative and have above average problem determination skills
Qualifications
- • Diploma in Computer Science or Diploma/Certificate in Computer Science plus relevant experience
- • Previous job or activity which shows/requires responsibility and an attention to detail, Ability to work for long periods outside the normal work-day while maintaining proper concentration on the assigned tasks. Comfort with and exposure to computer operating systems and networking technology
