Cartographer (Level 5)
Summary
The successful candidate will report to the Chief Cartographer (Mapping Services) Job Purpose: To construct and compile new and revised digital maps or charts from source materials đź’°$2,803,771 - $3,770,760 JMD per annum.
Responsibilities
Key Outputs:
- • Mastermap series completed
- • Technical Descriptions completed
- • Map overlays completed
- • Older map series updated
- • Special requests completed
- • Data gathered and processed
Key Responsibility Areas:
- • Checks scanned images for quality
- • Geo-references scanned image files
- • Digitizes features depicted on geo-referenced image files to a point, line or polygon vector file
- • Creates and populates attribute tables associated with features which were digitized
- • Adds symbology and other special features to maps
- • Edgematches associated map sheets, conduct transformation to the local coordinate system and checks for and corrects errors
- • Assists with the checking of technical notes to determine suitable specification for use in map development
- • Assists with provision of general Cartographic support to all Divisions within the Agency as may be requested
- • Assists with the completion of mapping request related to Systematic Registration and other special projects (Technical description maps, overlays etc.)
- • Assists with collection and processing of data from the field using prescribed data collection devices and software as required
- • Assists in the use of prescribed applications for the retrieval and processing of maps and plans.
- • Edits maps which have been quality checked
- • Assists with the maintenance of work equipment and map documents both manually and digitally.
Other:
- • Performs other related duties assigned from time to time by the Chief Cartographer/Supervisor Topographic Data Management
Performance Indicators:
- • Maps are sourced and scanned for quality on a timely basis
- • Digitizing features are correctly depicted on files
- • Created attribute tables associated with digitized features are carried out within the time specified
- • Symbology and other special features on maps are done to standard and in time specified
- • Gathered data are processed, using established guidelines, to be used in map construction
- • Maps are constructed to specified standard
- • Spatial data derived from map development are properly maintained in geodatabase or prescribed system
Resources Managed:
- • Data layers created on computer
Required Skills
- • Map reading skills
- • Knowledge in the use of Geographic Information Systems (GIS) and data collection devices and applications (GNSS, Field Maps etc.)
- • Excellent communication skills
- • Competence in interpreting aerial photographs
- • Competence in the use of related prescribed computer applications
Qualifications
- • First Degree in Cartography, Geography, Geomatics, Geographic Information Systems (GIS), Urban and Regional Planning or an equivalent program from a recognized institution and one (1) years experience working in a related area.
- • Diploma/Certificate in an Earth Related Science field, related basic training in Cartography or Introductory GIS and two (2) years’ experience.
- • Working knowledge of GIS applications and the use of handheld data collection devices

- • Working in contrasting light conditions which imposes strain on the eyes
- • Extended exposure to computer glare
- • High level of concentrated and visual attention during digitizing
- • Exposure to harsh environmental conditions during field visits
