Medical Laboratory Assistant

Responsibilities

• • Assist with organizing workflow.
• • Participate in checking incoming specimens for proper identification and sufficient quantity.
• • Assist with receiving and preparing samples for analysis.
• • Assist with the monitoring of all documents in the department including quality documents.
• • Assist with the performance and maintenance of quality control procedures and documentation to support compliance with ISO 15189 standards.
• • Perform tests requiring basic to intermediate knowledge and skills such as point of care rapid tests.
• • Participates in the training of Interns, Staff on rotation and New Staff Members.
• • Assists in the maintenance of Health and Safety Standards in the assigned Department in consultation with the Safety Officer.
• • Measure volumes for 24hour urine samples and aliquoting samples for analysis.
• • Participates in seminars, workshops and conferences as required for training in technical area.
• • Ensure that all instruments are supplied with reagents and disposables and are functioning properly.

Required Skills

• • Must have working knowledge of laboratory procedures
• • Strong organizational, interpersonal and problem-solving skills
• • Dependable, strong work ethic, initiative and flexibility
• • Proficiency with Laboratory Information System would be an asset.

Qualifications

• • Laboratory Technician training, Medical Technology training from an accredited institution, Phlebotomy certification and laboratory experience, or qualification in a science related field such as Biology, Chemistry, Microbiology, Molecular biology, etc.
