Chef
Summary
The Chef reports directly to the Industrial Relations and Welfare Specialist and is responsible for the day-to-day culinary operations of the Staff Canteen. Functions include maintaining food safety and quality standards, kitchen hygiene/cleanliness, menu creation, and inventory management.
Responsibilities
- • Manage all activities in the kitchen, including pre-preparation, food preparation and production, proper food storage and kitchen hygiene, to name a few.
- • Direct food preparation ensuring meals are prepared in a timely manner.
- • Implement new and creative menu options.
- • Ensure efficient, cost-effective kitchen operations that increase profitability and lessen food wastage.
- • Create and implement a standardized recipe catalogue of food offerings at the cafeteria.
- • Ensure all kitchen equipment are in good working condition and report any defects/issues immediately to Team Lead.
- • Ensure that all foods prepared conform to CPJ standards and Public Safety Regulations.
- • Assist Team Lead in maintaining appropriate inventory levels.
- • Foster a positive and collaborative work environment, promoting teamwork and professional growth.
- • Assist with training of Kitchen Staff.
- • Respond to feedback from staff and adjust menu offerings accordingly.
- • Assume the role of Team lead in his or her absence.
- • Perform any other duties assigned by management.
Required Skills

- • Adaptability and ability to manage well under pressure.
- • Ability to work flexible hours as the need arise.
- • Good time-management skills.
- • An understanding of the principles of good customer service.
Qualifications
- • Formal Culinary Arts training, licenses, and/or certifications.
- • Minimum 2-5 years related work experience.
- • Must possess the ability to plan, organize, supervise, inspect, and evaluate work of subordinates.
- • Must possess the ability to maintain a productive working relationship with canteen team and other departments.
- • Knowledge and understanding of Jamaica’s Health and Safety Regulations
- • Valid Food Handlers Permit
