The Jamaica Bauxite Institute seeks to engage a qualified and experienced individual for the following position: Director - Process Monitoring And Environmental Services (LEVEL 9) 💰Salary: $6,333,301 - $8,517,586 JMD per annum

Responsibilities

  • Provide oversight for Research and Development work on Bayer Process by-products such as sodium oxalate, gallium, and rare earths:

    • Oversee the research on the extraction of elements from Jamaican alumina plants' processes.
    • Determine the best method of removing sodium oxalate from Bayer Liquor and outline schemes for its safe disposal/use with possible benefits to the process.
  • Lead/participate in consultations/meetings with the management of the Bauxite companies as necessary to facilitate the execution of the JBI's duties and obligations to the industry.
  • Coordinate research programs for bauxite testing in both the Process Research Laboratory and Pilot Plants.
  • Develop a data file on both Jamaican and overseas bauxites and bauxite residues.
  • Manage comprehensive documentation of all plants in Jamaica, types of bauxite consumed, and all relevant operating parameters.
  • Work with the Process Engineer at JBI, other Jamaican alumina plant engineers and equipment, and instrument manufacturers, to develop testing programs for various types of equipment using the Pilot Plant's facilities.
  • Identify areas and unit operators in the present Jamaican alumina plants that may be improved, and write project proposals and justifications on the area of activities.
  • Identify threats and vulnerabilities and recommend mitigation measures for process efficiency.
  • Through collaboration, provide technical input for evaluating Analytical Services proposals and projects.
  • Responsible for the Implementation of the 2013 Memorandum of Understanding with the National Resources Conservation Authority (NRCA), now the National Environment and Planning Agency (NEPA), and ensure that reports are delivered in a timely manner.
  • Responsible for ensuring that environmental monitoring programs are in place at each bauxite mine, processing plant, and port facility and that the facilities are complying with the standards or have an active compliance plan in place.
  • Continuously review the environmental performance of the industry through the analysis of environmental monitoring data, audits, review meetings, site inspections, and the community councils.
  • Coordinate and conduct research programs on the environmental impact of the bauxite and alumina industry.
  • In conjunction with other agencies, where necessary, develop/coordinate proposed mitigative and corrective measures to minimize the impact of the industry on the environment.
  • Develop, coordinate, and collaborate with other divisions and entities to address environmental issues with communities.
  • Review Environmental Impact Assessments and technical reports on the bauxite and alumina industry operations.
  • Ensure that emergency response plans are in place for each bauxite and alumina operation and coordinate activities in case of such emergencies.
  • Ensure that updated closure plans are in place for each plant, mine, and port facility.
  • Facilitate educational programs on the environmental impact of the bauxite/alumina sector.
  • Make presentations on the environmental performance of the Industry.
  • Write and present papers at in-house seminars and at local and international symposia on research work at the Institute.

Qualifications

  • Master's Degree in Chemical Engineering or Environmental Management.
  • Training including elements related to Project Management.
