Assistant Manager – Legal Services
Summary
Provide a full range of legal services to Sagicor Group Jamaica, its subsidiaries, affiliates, divisions, departments, units, and branches assigned from time to time following appropriate consideration of the relevant legal, regulatory and business issues. Provide corporate secretarial services for companies within the Sagicor Group as required. Provide support to the Head of the Group Legal Department in the management of legal and regulatory risks for Sagicor Group.
Responsibilities
- • Conduct assessment of legal issues, identify and recommend strategies or processes to address the issues.
- • Research and advise on complex legal issues including, but not limited to, the areas of commercial, insurance, pension, real estate, investment and Intellectual Property laws.
- • Prepare and/or review contracts and undertake commercial transactions and where required, negotiate contracts on behalf of the company.
- • Identify legal trends and report on issues which may impact the Company’s operations including new legislation and regulations or case law and assist with drafting of policy to reflect the new laws for presentation to management and/or functional areas.
- • Assist in major projects for business lines as assigned from time to time.
- • Provide insurance claims and litigation management support to the Group in circumstances of pending litigation/claims, insurance claims.
- • Monitor External Counsel on litigation matters and ensure timely updates are provided within agreed timelines.
- • Make recommendations for suit or settlement options.
- • Ensure ongoing risk assessment of any pending claims or matters in litigation.
- • Prepare and submit reports to Vice President for onward transmission to the Board and relevant Committees and to Sagicor Financial Corporation.
- • Ensure representation at court and court-appointed mediations, labour tribunal, for and on behalf of the Company and to attend court to oversee the conduct of matters, where necessary.
- • Assist in preparation for Court and attend Mediation or Dispute Resolution and Disciplinary Hearings (where necessary) on behalf of the company.
- • Review and interpret Monitoring Orders issued under POCA or other applicable legislation and other court orders; in collaboration with the Compliance Unit to ensure compliance with the monitoring orders/ regulations and laws in general.
- • Assist in the development of new products on terms and conditions and ensure alignment with applicable laws and regulations.
- • Provide legal support to the Business Units (BU) on Disciplinary matters, Fraud/Misconduct cases and Police Investigations; conduct interviews with potential in-house witnesses, and assist with preparation of statements, where necessary.
- • Prepare monthly reports including, but not limited to, reports to Executive Management on matters handled by the Department.
- • Function as Recording Secretary for assigned subsidiary boards and committees.
- • Assist with administrative functions of the department as assigned.
- • Perform any other job-related duties assigned from time to time.
Required Skills
- • Sound knowledge of commercial law, litigation, financial services, conveyancing law and practice.
- • Sound knowledge of the Insurance Act, Banking Services Act, Companies Act, Income Tax Law, Financial Services Commission Act, Securities Act, the Pensions Act, General Consumption Tax Act, Proceeds of Crime Act, The Registration of Titles Act, The Registration (Strata Titles) Act, Data Protection Act and other relevant laws governing the operations of the Company and subsidiaries.
- • Good legal drafting, legal reasoning, research and analytical skills.
- • Good communication skills.
- • Good time management and organizing skills.
- • Proficiency in the use of computer software packages such as word processing and spreadsheet applications.
- • Strong leadership, people management and organizing skills.
Qualifications
- • Bachelor’s Degree in Law (LLB) from a recognized tertiary institution.
- • Certification in Legal Education.
- • A minimum of five (5) years’ working experience as an Attorney-At-Law qualified to practice in Jamaica or in a related field.
- • Completion of specialized courses or job training/expertise including, but not limited to, Banking and Commercial Law; Business Administration; Securities Law; Insurance Law; Corporate Finance; Real Property Law, Pension, Data Privacy and Dispute Resolution/Management, and continuing education to keep abreast of new developments.
- • Experience in the relevant areas of law and a working knowledge of banking/financial services systems and procedures and relevant technology applications.
