Summary

The Jamaica Defence Force (JDF) invites suitably qualified persons to enlist in the JDF as a Professional Entry Officer (PEO) to fill the following position: Veterinarian Nationality: Be a citizen of the Commonwealth

Responsibilities

• • Effectively prevent and control diseases and conditions of animals that are common to humans and to wild and domestic animals.
• • Protect and maintain the health and welfare of Ministry of National Security (MNS)-owned animals.
• • Control privately owned and stray animals at large on military installations through capture, impoundment, disposal, or other physical means.
• • Promote and support Human-Animal Bond programs.
• • Provide logistics support to the installation of veterinary services. This support includes budgeting for, programming, and planning maintenance, repair, and replacement of veterinary medical facilities.
• • Prepare reports and records prescribed for use by the Health Services Corps and/or JDF Commands.

• Provide training to appropriate personnel in:

  • • veterinary public health, zoonotic and other animal diseases, emergency animal first aid, nuclear, biological, and chemical (NBC) protective measures for animals, and animal care procedures.
• • Advise and assist in training programs pertaining to animal emergency medical care.
• • Inspect foods intended for Military Working Dog (MWD) consumption.
• • Maintain liaison with civilian health agencies in matters pertaining to animal health, veterinary public health, and zoonotic disease surveillance.

• Advise the Military Police on the veterinary medical aspects of the MWD Program. This will include advice on the following subjects:

  • • Health
  • • Physical standards
  • • Behavioral standards
  • • Training methods
  • • Training standards
  • • Nutrition
  • • Housing
  • • Procurement
  • • Dental Care
• • Conduct regular inspections of JDF kennels to ensure they are operated in accordance with the laws governing the practice in Jamaica.
• • Supervise MWD Handlers involved in the day-to-day care and management of the MWDs.
• • Perform any other duties that may be assigned.

Required Skills

• Knowledge:

  • • Excellent knowledge of veterinary medicine.
  • • Excellent knowledge of human-animal bonding strategies.

• Technical Skills:

  • • Ability to conduct training related to animal healthcare.
  • • Competency in managing a veterinary medical facility.
  • • Ability to engage in budget preparation.

• Critical and Analytical Thinking Skills:

  • • Strong organizational, analytical, and problem-solving skills.
  • • Ability to prioritize and work under pressure.
  • • High level of accuracy and attention to detail.
  • • Ability to work with a diverse community.

• Attitude:

  • • Possess an aptitude and desire to assimilate to military life.
  • • Self-driven and highly motivated.
  • • Proactive approach to animal healthcare.
  • • High interest in working with animals.

Qualifications

• • Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (DVM or B.Sc. or BVetMed) from an accredited university.
• • Post-graduate studies in Public Health would be an asset.
• • Registered and licensed to practice in Jamaica.
• • At least four (4) years' experience in a similar capacity.

• Military Standards:

  • • In addition to the academic qualifications and competencies, candidates must be able to pass the assessment requirements for enlistment in the JDF.
