
Mechanical Technician (Workshop)
Summary
The mechanical technician is responsible for the preparation of test specimens, to prepare and fabricate basic parts for equipment and fixtures, to maintain the workshop equipment, to assist with technical duties including sample collection for testing and calibration to achieve the departmental objectives, and to assist in general duties requiring his/her expertise.
Responsibilities
- • Prepare test samples in accordance with the procedures and work instructions from the laboratories to which they are assigned.
- • Perform and record routine maintenance on workshop equipment according to schedule.
- • Report on workshop activities
- • Assist in development projects for the laboratories, including the fabrication of rigs to facilitate tests and calibrations.
- • Be aware of the requirements of the quality system and perform duties within these requirements.
- • Secure and maintain samples kept in the workshop according to procedures
Required Skills
- • Working knowledge of the Standards and Weights and Measures Act
- • Knowledge of calibration systems, practices and procedures
- • Knowledge of maintenance systems, practices and procedures
- • Knowledge of quality management systems
- • Ability to meet stipulated deadlines
- • Knowledge of CNC programming would be an asset
- • Ability to prepare technical reports
- • Good interpersonal skills
- • Good written and oral communication skills
- • Good customer service attitude
- • Willingness to assist
Qualifications
- • Certificate in Mechanical Engineering and/or Workshop Technology from a recognized tertiary institution or equivalent
Experience:
- • Two years of experience in working with lathes, milling machines, and welding processes, including oxy-acetylene welding and metal arc welding
- • Experience in the use of measuring instruments, including Vernier calipers and micrometer screw gauges.
