The Ministry of Education and Youth offers a Financial Assistance Grant to support eligible tertiary-level students in Jamaica. This article provides detailed information on the application period, submission guidelines, required documents, and conditions for receiving this grant.

Application Period and Submission Guidelines

The application period for funding commences April 1 and closes June 30.

Applicants are encouraged to SUBMIT their applications even if they are awaiting Status/Tuition letters and Transcripts. All other required documents for consideration should be uploaded promptly.

Please note the following:

  • Students awaiting CSEC, CAPE, and acceptance letters from their institution of choice will be provisionally processed pending the release of their results. Submission of all other documents must be completed by June 30.
  • Continuing students without transcripts, statement of fees, and status letters may submit all outstanding documents by June 30.

ONLY SHORTLISTED STUDENTS AND/OR COMPLETED APPLICATIONS WILL BE PROCESSED.

Financial Assistance Grant Details

The following supporting documents are required for your application to be processed:

  • Letter of acceptance (new students only)
  • Status letter (continuing students)
  • Progress Report (Transcript) - continuing students only
  • Evidence of outstanding balances or tuition fees (must be obtained from institution)
  • Job Letter (If Employed)
  • Certified copy of Passport sized photograph
  • Certified copy of birth certificate
  • Certified copy of TRN (Taxpayer Registration Number)
  • Evidence of need – reference letter from two referees from one of the following categories:
    • Principal or teacher
    • Pastor
    • Guidance Counsellor or representative from Student Support Services
    • Member of Parliament
    • Justice of the Peace
    • Only government and non-profit organizations are approved for this component.

Important: Applications without appropriate supporting documents will NOT be processed.

Conditions:

  • Applicant must be between the age of 18 - 35 years on or before December 31 in the year of application.
  • Applicant must be a Full-Time student at a UCJ (University Council of Jamaica) approved tertiary institution.
  • Applicants must have a GPA of 2.2 or above.
  • Applicants for Grants are to note that should any single award or the sum total of multiple awards exceed $299,999.00, the candidate will be bonded to work in Jamaica for a prescribed period.
  • The length of the bonding period will be determined by the bands outlined in the Bonding Policy administered by the Ministry of Finance and the Public Service.
  • Additional grants will be determined based on student performance in the previous year.
  • Must be able to complete voluntary hours upon approval.

Important Warning:

Any misleading/fraudulent information given will disqualify an applicant from accessing the programme.
