Summary

The Associate Director of Engineering is a newly introduced leadership role at Deel, responsible for managing and scaling engineering teams within the Performance Review & Org Chart domain. This role will be critical in ensuring engineering efforts align with business objectives, customer needs, and Deel’s growth strategies. You will lead multiple teams, driving the development and execution of Deel’s product roadmap while fostering a high-performing and collaborative engineering culture. You will play a key role in defining expectations, refining processes, and shaping the role for future hires.

Responsibilities

  • Guide and mentor Team Leads and their teams, fostering a culture of collaboration, continuous learning, and career growth.
  • Lead the Performance Review & Org Chart domain.
  • Scale engineering operations by structuring and optimizing processes to ensure efficiency as the team grows.
  • Ensure teams deliver high-quality code in a fast-paced, iterative environment using agile practices.
  • Provide technical leadership in system design, troubleshooting, and debugging, ensuring scalable and reliable software solutions.
  • Lead complex problem-solving initiatives, performing root cause analysis on critical issues.
  • Oversee hiring and team expansion, building teams from scratch and onboarding engineers to hit the ground running.
  • Work closely with senior leadership to align engineering strategies with Deel’s overall business goals.
  • Act as a hands-on leader when necessary, stepping in for technical problem-solving and occasional coding tasks.

Required Skills

  • Proven ability to build teams from scratch, launch new products, and scale engineering operations.
  • Strong technical expertise in backend or full-stack development, with proficiency in modern web server frameworks like Python, JavaScript, and front-end technologies like React or Angular.
  • Strong system design skills and the ability to troubleshoot complex issues effectively.
  • Hands-on experience with debugging and problem resolution, including using developer tools and observability platforms like Datadog.
  • Customer-centric mindset, ensuring rapid response to critical issues and a focus on delivering an exceptional user experience.
  • Proven experience in hiring and growing teams.
  • Ability to thrive in a fast-paced, remote-first environment and collaborate effectively across time zones.

Qualifications

  • 10+ years of experience in software development, with at least 2 years managing multiple engineering teams.
  • Experience leading teams in a B2B SaaS environment, ideally working with enterprise customers.
  • HR tech experience is a plus but not required.

Communicate observations and trends on confirmed/suspected fraudulent transaction activity to stakeholders.
