Summary

Individuals within the role of Data Visualization Engineer play a pivotal role in identifying business intelligence, reporting, and data analytics needs within the organization. They collaborate closely with cross-functional and IT teams to transform raw complex data into critical information and actionable knowledge/insights that drive data-driven decision-making across the organization. These professionals are tasked with developing a deep understanding of the business at a granular level to effectively identify and address critical issues. This role requires a deep understanding of data visualization best practices, a creative mindset, and the ability to communicate complex concepts effectively. Data Visualization Engineers are responsible for providing accurate, congruent, and reliable data while ensuring its accessibility to users for direct consumption or integration with other systems. They educate and train clients on utilizing data as an analytical tool, innovatively displaying information in new formats and content for the purpose of analysis and exploration. Furthermore, Data Visualization Engineers actively engage with clients to determine business requirements, prioritize tasks, define key performance indicators (KPIs), and develop Business Intelligence (BI) and data warehouse (DW) strategies. This includes collaborating with business and development teams to design, document, and implement dashboards, alerts, and reports. They take accountability for providing leadership and driving independent initiatives in facilitating information gathering, structured documentation, and presentation of findings to all levels of management. In addition to these responsibilities, Data Visualization Engineers conduct thorough analyses of functional business processes and requirements, actively participating in the development of business cases to support process changes and IT projects. They possess a deep understanding of how data is transformed into information and knowledge, recognizing its pivotal role in supporting and enabling key business processes. These professionals go beyond surface-level insights, delving into the source, definition, philosophy, and foundational roots of each data element to create meaningful information. They thrive in a team environment, collaborating effectively with colleagues from diverse backgrounds to achieve common objectives.

Responsibilities

  • Leadership in BI Projects:
    • Directs, organizes, and leads BI workstream projects, focusing on the seamless implementation and utilization of new BI/Data Visualization Tools and Systems. This leadership role requires not only a deep understanding of the tools in question but also the ability to guide and motivate teams towards successful project completions.
  • Subject Matter Expertise:
    • Offer subject matter expertise in core functions of business intelligence, advising on the strategic and operational use of BI to extract maximum value. This expertise is crucial in ensuring that BI/Data Visualization practices and technologies are effectively aligned with the organization's objectives.
  • In-depth Analysis and Business Intelligence Needs Identification:
    • Conduct thorough evaluations of both internal and external customers’ needs and capabilities, aiming to deliver solutions that not only meet their current requirements but also anticipate future needs. This includes a careful assessment to understand the context in which the BI solutions will operate, ensuring they are both appropriate and scalable.
  • Strategic Contribution to Solution Design:
    • Provide strategic insights into the business requirements for solution design, ensuring that the developed solutions are not only technically sound but also strategically aligned with the business goals.
  • Technology Trends and Impact Assessment:
    • Actively identify and contribute insights on new technology opportunities that promise significant impacts on enterprise-wide BI systems. This foresight into technological trends is key to maintaining the organization's competitive edge and ensuring its BI capabilities are state-of-the-art.
  • Data Exploration and Analysis:
    • Leverage complex datasets to uncover patterns, meaningful relationships, anomalies, and trends. Data Visualization Senior requires versatility to perform analyses across a broad spectrum of requests, employing data in various formats and from multiple platforms. Exploratory analysis is essential for generating insights that can influence strategic directions and operational tactics.
  • Cross-functional Solution Development:
    • Work on highly complex projects that require cross-functional collaboration that span across various functions within the organization, delivering enterprise IT and business intelligence solutions This involves a comprehensive approach, integrating various datasets and systems to provide coherent and impactful analytical solutions.
  • Research and Model Development:
    • Undertake research on business problems and develop models that provide a deep understanding of these issues. This involves using analytical and statistical tools to create frameworks that help dissect and address business challenges.
  • Interactive Dashboards and Reports Creation:
    • Design and implement interactive dashboards and reports using advanced data visualization tools like Power BI. This involves transforming complex datasets into visually engaging and intuitive graphical representations that support data-driven decision-making
  • Development of Reporting Best Practices:
    • Formulate and promote best practices for report deployment, ensuring that reports are not only accurate and timely but also accessible to the intended audience. This includes standardizing report design, ensuring data integrity, and optimizing report distribution mechanisms to enhance decision-making across the organization
  • Research and Model Development:
    • Undertake research on business problems and develop models that provide a deep understanding of these issues. This involves using analytical and statistical tools to create frameworks that help dissect and address business challenges
  • Data Analysis and Insight Generation:
    • Analyse extensive and complicated datasets to unearth trends, patterns, and insights. This process is crucial for developing visualizations that not only represent data effectively but also reveal actionable intelligence hidden within the data
  • Collaboration and Exploratory Data Analysis:
    • Engage in close collaboration with data warehousing teams, business analysts, and data scientists to fully understand the underlying data structures. Conduct exploratory data analysis to discover hidden insights and optimization opportunities, thereby enhancing the overall value of the visualizations created
  • Stakeholder Engagement and Support:
    • Present findings in a compelling manner to stakeholders, complementing verbal communication with insightful visualizations. Additionally, provide training and support to ensure users can effectively interpret and interact with the BI tools and dashboards
  • Leadership in User Testing Initiatives:
    • Provide critical direction for the planning, designing, and execution of comprehensive user testing efforts. This encompasses the oversight of all phases involved in the implementation of new systems or modifications, including the testing phase and the resolution of any issues that arise. By closely managing these efforts, you ensure that the development process is both efficient and effective, minimizing disruptions and optimizing performance
  • Analytical Review of Testing Results:
    • Conduct in-depth analyses of testing results to ascertain whether the developed solutions accurately meet the business requirements. This critical evaluation process is essential for verifying the effectiveness of the data visualizations and ensuring they deliver the intended value to the business

Required Knowledge, Skills and Competencies

Preferred Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Information Systems, Business, or a related field
  • 5 - 7 years of relevant technical or business experience
  • Proficient technical, analytical, and interpersonal skills
  • Familiarity with business operations and system requirements processes
  • Knowledge of IIBA principles and practices
